Spin #124 : Low Altitude Living: Ocean Alley

SUNDAY DROP - SPIN # 124 FROM THE R'NR WITH RYLO RECORD COLLECTION

Keeping things local with this weeks record selection. Probably more of a Summer sounding album and style of music, but hey why not in the middle of Winter too. I'm talking about 'Low Altitude Living' by Australian band, Ocean Alley. The weather has been beautiful for most of the weekend and we made the most of that sunshine. On Saturday we played cubby houses, by building a small house and fence line out of old carboard boxes. The kids used their imaginations and had an absolute ball. It was tough to get them away from it and they definitely got their sun quota for the day. I've included a couple of pictures below for memories. Trying to give the kids a lot of time outside when the weather is good. We followed it up with a movie night and rolled out the inflatable mattress for the loungin (kids word for loungeroom).

It was a bit of fun kicking the ball around the yard too and our 5 year old son kicked some powerful goals. On Friday, his school had 'Education Day'. It was a chance to see the school and his classroom again, now that he is more comfortable in his school environment. The amount of parents, grandparents and siblings that turned up was above expectations and it felt more like a day at the Sydney Royal Easter Show! Chaos in the sausage sizzle line ended up holding the assembly up and everyone wasn't able to fit within the hall. He had a good time and was very proud in showing me his place in his classroom. After taking him home, we placed some records on the turntable and drummed to a few albums from, The Rolling Stones and Rival Sons. I'm writing this prior to the birthday lunch for my mum on Sunday, so I haven't had a chance to include some moments from that lunch. I'll have to include them in our Sunday spin next week.

For this week, we have been finding time to spin this record in parts. Managed to get a lot of listening done on Saturday evening, once everyone was tired from playing outside all day. So where do we start with the record that is spinning on our turntable right now? There is a funky, psychedelic sound that infuses a bit of soul and surf rock. Yep, It's a bit confusing but those are the genres that come into my mind as I listen to this record with our little ones. The LP is a marbled black and grey smoke style and they've included a decent lyric booklet with accompanying photographs of the band. There is a smoothness to their sound and is something I could listen too all day long. Anyone who doesn't enjoy this music can't be trusted (in my opinion).

Looking around the room as it plays through the Marshall Woburn II speaker, I can see our daughter and son tapping along. The littlest Rylo says, "Daddy, I'm going to dance now, ok". Night Kat Kiz is a bit partial to Ocean Alley and they are on our list of bands to see. A couple of standout songs on the album are, 'TOUCH BACK DOWN', 'HOME', 'DRINKS & CIGARS' and 'CHANGES'. There are a few bands in our collection that have stood out to us. Ocean Alley is one of those bands, that we feel that we need to have their whole collection at hand. They really haven't put out a bad album and it gets difficult when picking their absolute best studio album. Of course, 'Chiaroscuro' stands out, because it was such a big album full of singles. As the other albums have come out, I feel that the collection is very enjoyable. Another band that I feel has this is fellow Aussie band, Boy & Bear.

The band look like they had a lot of fun with the photoshoot for this album. Not entirely sure where the location is but there is a lot of little things to take notice of in the background. One song that really got our kids attention was the funk displayed by, 'SIMPLE PLEASURES'. They are such little characters. There are a few similarities to Arctic Monkeys - 'Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino' album and its vintage feel. What have been your impressions of 'Low Altitude Living'? I was hoping that we had a breakdown of what instruments were played by who within the packaging, but I'm being picky.

Keep your spirits up as much as you can and appreciate the good things going on in your life. I'm grateful for a lot of things and there will always be things that I want to improve on. Hug your loved ones, reach out to true friends and love yourself! I'm keeping off the social media posts for a while. I'm still keeping the blog alive and who knows what the future holds. I have to go now because our kids look like they are beginning to do some cartwheels and jumping games around the room.

Until our next Spin.....
