Spin #125 : Vol.3 (The Subliminal Verses): Slipknot

SUNDAY DROP - SPIN # 125 FROM THE R'NR WITH RYLO RECORD COLLECTION

Welcome to this weeks Sunday drop and one that I probably won't show our children just yet. Probably a bit heavy in parts and an album that they will grow to love as they get older. Plus they are more excited running around with Mr. Balloon today. It's a green balloon on a string from our son's school and a funny face drawn with pen. It truly reminds me of Milky Joe (see image below).

I was a bit over posting on social media and thought that I'd take a break from the posts for a while. After three weeks, I can honestly say that It's nice to have the break. I've been listening to a few more podcasts recently during my travels and investing my time more into ideas of how I can help myself and in turn, help my family prosper. If you're here and reading this, then that means you don't need a 'MWSP' or 'Vinyl Friday' post to know that we still spin records every week and talk about it as a family. For that reason, I thank you. I was stumbling across some new songs over the weekend and recommend the new Marilyn Manson tracks - 'As Sick As The Secrets Within' and 'Raise The Red Flag'.

Before we owned a copy of this album, I truly never thought that I would get the chance to purchase one for myself. There were rumours that the band would break up or stop re-issuing back catalogue albums because they were changing labels. A few years ago, they did change labels and Roadrunner records seemed to cash in on their name by pumping out re-issues en masse. I know that this album might not be regarded as their best (apparently 'Iowa' is). I feel that 'Vol.3 (The Subliminal Verses)' was an important album for the band to release at that stage of their career. I know the first album really messed with their minds because of the brutality of it all and maybe they mended some wounds on this one.

Slipknot's album, 'Vol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses)', was released in 2004 and marked a significant evolution in the band's sound and approach to music. Known for their intense and aggressive style, Slipknot showcased a more melodic and introspective side on this album. The songs on Vol. 3 delve into themes of inner turmoil, personal struggles, and emotional depth, reflecting a more mature and complex perspective from the band members. The album features a diverse range of musical elements, blending heavy metal with alternative metal, nu-metal, and even progressive rock.

Slipknot's trademark intensity is still present, but it is complemented by intricate melodies, haunting atmospheres, and thought-provoking lyrics. Tracks like 'DUALITY', 'BEFORE I FORGET' and 'VERMILION' became instant classics, resonating with fans and critics alike. Some people will never be pleased however and there were a couple of examples of critics constantly comparing this album to 'Iowa'. Fuck, I'm annoyed for the band. Always having to prove yourself to others. It's exhausting and something that pisses me off. 'Vol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses)' not only solidified Slipknot as one of the most innovative bands in the metal scene but also showcased their willingness to push boundaries and explore new sonic territories. The album's production quality, songwriting complexity, and emotional depth continue to captivate listeners, making it a timeless piece of work in their discography.

What is important these days is the health and happiness of our kids firstly. I manifest goodness for their little lives everyday and really would give up all of my luck, if it meant they would live a happy and well adjusted life. I love them to bits and catch myself thinking about their happiness a lot lately. Whether that is giving them a fun adventure away or simple pleasures at home with time in the sunshine and painting outside. I will be the best dad and husband that I can be and when I'm not, I will accept that I'm only human. I will never give up. Night Kat Kiz has been my rock for a long time and she doesn't know how beautiful she is sometimes. I love her 'way' and it reminded me of a very good song by The Kooks called, 'Sway'. Give it a listen if you like music!!!! Completely different kind of song to the Slipknot album we are spinning this week and I'm sure you will enjoy it.

On Saturday there was a lot of care put into the house by our little family. We managed to get all the dusting, vacuuming, cleaning, laundry, mowing etc. done and got the kids involved. We were very tired and everyone ate all of their dinner without much fuss - for probably the first time in a while. We finished with cups of milk and homemade cookies, everyone smiling. We managed to get some play time outside in between jobs and make the most of the sunshine. Our son was fascinated with his trucks and also running around with the ball and avoiding my tackles.

An adventure that is definitely worth mentioning was what we found in our bedroom. I was walking back with the morning cups of coffee and noticed a decent sized lizard in our room. By the time we moved everything from underneath, I had lost sight of it. While I was out doing the lawns however, Night Kat Kiz did her prowling and stalking to capture the lizard in a box and bring it outside. Legend Mum and the kids let her know how good she was.

So the pressing that we have is a violet coloured double LP set and I didn't realise until looking deeper into it, that this album was the ONLY one produced by Rick Rubin. I'll have a guess and say he has been involved in 100 albums over the years. (Rylo looks up online exact number to confirm - over 230+........damn). Bit strange that so many artists, from so many genres have been produced by one man. Slipknot are cooking up something with their new label and the whispers are there saying that a new album is coming out this year. I look forward to it. If you want to hear some music that has a similar style, check out Vended's debut album that will hit shelves later this year. They have a couple members who are the children of members in Slipknot. I'll have to add that one to our want list or something that will be requested at birthday or Christmas time. A song that pays homage to their fans is, 'PULSE OF THE MAGGOTS'. The drumming on this track by Joey is addictive to tap along with and solidifies this album as a must have in anyone's collection.

I was typing the above and heard our daughter try to get her brother's attention. She puts her little fist close to her mouth and says "aaahhuummmm". We were teaching her about saying, "excuse me" when asking a question or interrupting a conversation. She makes the world brighter and I love her little smile. If there is ever a bad moment in my day, I think of our little hugs together. She also got into bed on Friday night holding her dollies and said, "I'm so happy Mummy". Then proceeded to tuck herself into the bed and fall asleep.

I hope that you have enjoyed spinning this album with my little family and maybe get yourself a copy if you are able to. I'll leave some lyrics here that I love from this song and will see if you can figure out what song it is from.

"Hard to say what caught my attention. Fixed and crazy, aphid attraction. Carve my name in my face, to recognise. Such a pheromone cult to terrorize. I wont let this build up inside of me....x 4. I'm a slave and I am a master. No restraints and unchecked collectors. I exist through my need to self oblige".

A very happy birthday for my mum who celebrated in the week and also for my brother in law celebrating today. Sorry that the Tigers won't be playing finals mate and hopefully they can pull some wins together to round out the year. We've had a bit of rain this week so I'll leave this weeks spin there and go do a puzzle with the kids. Make yourself a cuppa or hot chocolate and invest in yourself. If you don't, nobody else will. After listening to this record again today, I can't understand why Corey Taylor didn't like the way his vocals sounded on this album. I feel like he should do more of it on the albums to come. Out of the first three albums put out by Slipknot, this one would be the one I enjoy listening from start to finish the most. Guitarist Jim Root also agrees that this is his favourite record by the band. What do you guys think? Where does it rank in their discography for you?

Until our next Spin.....
